The online tirade, that has Bengali women being labelled “gold-diggers” and accused of “practising black magic” among other things, have forced livid Twitterati to report these posts to the police and the state women’s commission. Several activists, members of the intelligentsia and actors, including Trinamool Congress MP Nusrat Jahan, have also protested against the trolling.

“We are enquiring into the complaints and collecting information linked to these,” joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Sharma said on Monday. Cyber cell officials said they have already contacted nodal officers seeking details of the social media handles used to post the offensive comments.
West Bengal Commission for Women chairperson Leena Gangopadhyay said she, too, had received several complaints. “We will be sending these to the police’s cyber cell for an inquiry. Based on their report, the commission will decide the next step,” she said.
